Hello World!

So we may have a Captain Kirk (whom I've never heard of, but that's a lot better than someone I don't like). And we may have a Scotty, or rather three Scottys - I'm rooting for Paul McGillion because I like him on Stargate Atlantis. We have a Uhura whom I like from Pirates of the Caribbean, a Spock I like from Heroes, a Chekov I don't know but I'm always willing to give props to anyone whose parents are ice skaters. I'm trying to be excited about this movie, really.

But I keep seeing previews for The Dark Is Rising and they make me cringe outright. It's not that I object to any single element - it's all right with me if they made Will an American, and I can think of no one more suited to play the Rider than Christopher Eccleston, but it looks like they've extracted all British and Welsh mythology from the storyline and turned it into a straightforward bland Good vs. Evil story with special effects. I really don't want to see that or take my kids to see that even if it looks pretty.

And I keep being afraid of the same thing happening with Star Trek. Maybe it'll feel entirely disconnected from the original, like Bruckheimer's King Arthur, or maybe it will be agonizing, like The Avengers movie. I can't help being nervous.
