Enterprise will be getting some reinforcements to deal with the new alien threat to Earth introduced in "The Expanse", executive producer Rick Berman said yesterday.

"We're going to be dealing with some new, non-Starfleet people coming on the ship," Berman told the Sci-Fi Wire. While the producer had previously revealed there would be new recurring characters introduced for the show's third season (story), this is the first indication that the fresh faces will be joining the NX-01 itself.

The purpose of the new arrivals will be "to add a little muscle for the potentially violent situations our crew will be coming up against", according to Berman. This is the first time non-Starfleet personnel have been seconded to Enterprise since the arrival of T'Pol and Doctor Phlox in "Broken Bow".

"The Expanse" revolves around an unprovoked attack on Earth by an unknown alien species, which leaves a massive scar of devastation through Florida and Cuba (story). This prompts Starfleet to send Enterprise into a region of space known as the Delphic Expanse to track down the perpetrators. "One of our characters is going to lose someone back on Earth during this devastating blow," Berman said.

As previously indicated in UPN's official synopsis for the episode, T'Pol will also face a difficult decision about her future. "There's going to be a major change to T'Pol, based on whether or not she'll join the crew" on their new mission.
