Hello World!

5.1 Dolby Digital DTS goodness. I am in heaven with my new sound system that I bought myself as a birthday present (any excuse). It's amazing what a whole new lease of life it can put on a movie — the sound is just amazing, much better than my old bog standard Dolby Prologic.

The Bourne Identity was the first test, and gun fire and Kali bone-crunching was in wonderful, loud, house-vibrating DTS. Brilliant. When Deanna decides to park the ship in Generations, the crash scene is accomplished with wonderful eardrum-bursting thunder. And I'd never have thought I could get such joy from even Dolby Digital logo trailers. A helicopter flying in is a thing of joy.

All in all, a good investment. I'm eyeing widescreen TVs now though, so this could be costly.

Anyway, before I finish this site column, I need to turn to a more serious matter regarding another other TrekToday editor — Caillan. I've known Christian a lot longer than Caillan, so the former is more used to my ways than the latter. My t-shirt says, "Don't annoy the crazy person", and that pretty much sums me up.

Now, I am a small fan of actress Julie Benz... and by a small fan, I mean having pretty much every DVD of hers, even if she's in the film for 10 frames (quite normal if you ask me). When I say to Christian, do you know Julie and do you like her, he has the sense to say "yes, Antony, yes" on demand. "I can't remember her," is the wrong answer, as delivered by Caillan recently. "I still can't remember her," after seeing a photo is very much the wrong answer (at this point I was twitching sporadically).

I mean, come on? How can someone not know who she is, and admire her wonderful acting and radiant beauty (not that I'm bias)? I don't want to start an incident... you know, like the almost-watchable "Night" or anything. But I think this is the new TrekToday controversy for 2003, as I'm starting it by never speaking to Caillan again, and maybe starting some sort of lynch mob to dish out justice in Julie's name. Julie fans, unite behind my in my crusade.

And if you don't know who Julie Benz is... just remember the t-shirt, and answer "Oh yes, I remember her."

Trek Two Years Ago

  • Series V To Be Called 'Enterprise'?
It was rumoured, and ultimately true, that Series V was to be called Enterprise. "The 'Enterprise' name could be a considerable asset for the next series", theorised Christian at the time. "The Original Series and the Next Generation are still by far the most popular installments in the Star Trek franchise, and if Series V were to feature another Starship Enterprise they might be drawn back at least to sample the next show's pilot." The pilot was indeed sampled, by over 12 million viewers.

  • Exclusive: Full Series V Character List
In probably the biggest breaking news in the history of the site, TrekToday was the first to publish a list of the characters that were to star in Enterprise. A few things changed, Jackson Archer became Jonathan Archer for one, but the details of the crew are all there. Of his character, the casting sheet said: "Bold personality. Intensely curious. Born and raised an explorer. Unlike the Starfleet captains in centuries to come, he exhibits a sense of wonder and excitement, as well as a little trepidation about the strange things he will encounter. He holds a grudge against the Vulcans, who he blames for impeding humanity's progress. But his science officer is Vulcan, and he's struggling to reconsider those preconceptions. Although he has a strong sense of duty, he's a bit of a renegade — he's not afraid to question orders or even disobey them if he feels in his gut that he's right...."
