Hello World!

The calendar may say February 1, which is deep in the heart of winter, but for me, today signals the start of spring cleaning. It’s not the scrubbing and dusting part of spring cleaning that I’m doing today though. That will be done later when my neck is fully healed. What I’m doing now is ridding myself of years of accumulated junk.

I have a confession to make. I am a packrat. I hate to throw or give anything away that is in good shape or that I might use someday. Needless to say, my closets, cabinets and drawers are stuffed full. When I began today’s cull, all three drawers of my nightstand were packed solid.

Given that we might be moving within the next year or so and the fact that I can’t find a specially-made necklace that I very much want to wear this spring, I decided to kill two birds with one stone. So I gathered a few garbage bags and began my task.

It is interesting what one finds when going through things that haven’t been sorted in…er…at least a decade. Pictures of the children when they were young. Game pieces from games long gone. Earrings that have escaped from their mates. Money. Souvenir brochures from Disney World.

No necklace yet. But I got rid of 2/3 of the junk in my nightstand. In a week or two, I’ll have more room in all the closets and dressers and probably a couple of dollars worth of spare change in my wallet. Then I will have to do the thing that I dread most, the book cull. Have I mentioned that I have eight bookcases all over the house, two plastic storage bins of books in the garage, four plastic storage bins worth in my office and, uh, six or seven book boxes under my bed?

I think that my “spring cleaning” might well extend into the autumn.

Jolan Tru,
T’Bonz
