Visiting the Old Vic Theatre School, which he attended from 1957-9, Patrick Stewart said the Bristol school is one of the places to which he owes much of his success.

The Bristol Evening Post reported that Stewart appeared at the school on a trip from Bath, where he is currently appearing at the Theatre Royal in The Master Builder.

"The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School has not changed very much at all apart from the gardens out the front," the actor said, recalling his nervewracking first audition and that he "loved coming" to the building once he was accepted.

He added, "It's a great city and I was lucky enough to come back some years later and actually work for the Old Vic itself."

Stewart also expressed gratitude to the local crowds coming to see him and with his present work in The Master Builder. "I am so happy with the play and the people I am working with just now," he said.
