Rumours are swirling about the prominent role of Christopher Pike, Spock's captain before Kirk, in the upcoming Star Trek movie.

"I have some info from an anonymous source regarding some pretty huge story details," wrote Vic Holtreman at Screen Rant, who said that the focus of the film would be far more on Spock than the rest of the crew and had no scenes at Starfleet Academy.

"The adventure takes place on a USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike, with Pike and crew being helped out by Kirk but not until much later in the film," added the source. "We will get to see the maiden voyage of the original Enterprise: NCC-1701."

TrekMovie.com noted that its sources have also said that Pike will be in the film. "Any Trekkie who knows his history...know that when we see Spock in his time before TOS he is serving under Captain Pike," wrote Anthony Pascale. "J.J. Abrams himself stated that the film is 'Spock-centric,' and TrekMovie.com sources have stated that Spock does have a bigger role in the film."

As for who will be playing Pike - not Tom Cruise as was once rumoured, according to Cruise himself (story) - The IESB claimed that according to their sources, it will be Josh Lucas. "These sources are reliable and fairly certain of Abrams wanting Lucas for the lesser known, but still highly coveted, role of original Enterprise Captain."

Actually, in canon as it stands now, Robert April was the original Enterprise captain, but since all information about the role of Pike is currently unconfirmed, anything's possible.
