Scott Bakula will star as family patriarch Charlie Anderson in a production of the Civil War musical Shenandoah at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC, where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at the end of that war.

Though he is best known for playing Captain Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise and Sam Beckett on Quantum Leap, Bakula's first professional role was in a New York production of Shenandoah playing the character Sam. TheaterMania.com reports that the new production will run from March 17th through May 21st 2006 at the historic theatre.

The musical, which tells the story of a Virginia family during the US Civil War, won several Tony awards during its initial run. Jeff Calhoun, who staged recently staged Ford's Tony Award-nominated revival of the Huckleberry Finn musical Big River, will direct and choreograph this production.

Playbill noted that Shenandoah is based on a movie with the same title starring James Stewart. It ran for several years on Broadway in the 1970s during the Vietnam War. The musical's book is by James Lee Barrett, Peter Udell and Philip Rose with music by Gary Geld and lyrics by Udell.

Bakula received a Tony Award nomination for his role in Romance Romance. He also earned four Emmy nominations for Quantum Leap.

Information and tickets will be available from Ford's Theatre.
