Alaska Welcomes A New James T. Kirk

Parents in Alaska have named their fifth child after James Tiberius Kirk.

"James will be our last baby and with four older brothers and sisters we thought he might need some of the captain's qualities," Rebecca McInnes Weldy - the mother of James Tiberius Kirk Weldy - told The Anchorage Daily News. "The original Kirk was bold, determined and brave, so hopefully he will be, too."

Rebecca said that neither she nor her husband, Marcus Weldy, was a convention-going "Trekkie" but said that she has been a fan of the show for most of her life. "I really, really liked the first 'Star Trek' and William Shatner," she explained. "He's the only captain in my opinion."

Even so, she did watch The Next Generation, along with her parents and siblings. "We originally just liked the name James, then Tiberius was going to be [the baby]'s middle name. My mom loved the idea and said, 'You've got to put Kirk on there too,'" she added.

James was born at home, having arrived early. His older siblings are named Roy, Rosabella, Vincent and Nicolaus.
