Paramount Home Entertainment is holding a contest and survey to determine fan interest in thematic DVD box sets which would include episodes from all five Star Trek series.

ifMagazine reports that Paramount will celebrate Star Trek's 40th anniversary with "Fan Collective Edition" DVD sets, whose proposed themes thus far include Klingons, Borg, time travel and Q. An online survey at StarTrek.com allows fans to pick five episodes per theme from a list or to nominate their own choices. There are 39 episodes suggested which include Klingons, for instance, and 12 featuring Q.

At the end of the survey, fans can nominate their own suggested box sets, which might include anything from Mirror universe episodes (appearing in the original series, Deep Space Nine and forthcoming on Enterprise to stories set on holodecks, holosuites or the like.

TV Shows on DVD notes that the lower cost of these sets compared to the hefty complete-season sets may make it easier for Star Trek to reach a broader DVD audience. "Even if you don't intend to buy these, you can help decide what newbies to the Trek legend ought to see when they get their first taste of the phenomenon by buying or renting these sets," the article notes.

Fans voting in the survey have an opportunity to register to win a Star Trek: Enterprise Season One DVD box set. The StarTrek.com survey is here.
