About.com's Star Trek guide, Julia Houston, has posted the latest edition of her weekly feature article series. This week she had the opportunity to speak with prolific Trek author, Keith R.A. DeCandido.

JH: You're writing so many things, it's hard to know where to begin. How about that duology, The Brave and the Bold? This sounds really interesting. Can you tell me more about it?

KD: I originally pitched it as one of the big crossovers, and John Ordover looked at it, thought it was too unwieldy, and suggested trimming it to just four short novellas at two books, and having me write the whole thing. I had no problem with that, and so I pared it down. It's a better story for it, anyhow.

The plot involves four pieces of an ancient artifact that are each discovered over time. Each artifact is dangerous in its own way, and the four crews we're familiar with from TV team up with another ship or group to solve the crisis that grows out of that danger.

Kirk's Enterprise teams up with Commodore Decker and the Constellation (a year before it went boom in "The Doomsday Machine"). Sisko and the DS9 gang team up with Captain Keogh and the Odyssey (just prior to their going boom in "The Jem'Hadar"; this will also spell out the enmity between Koegh and Dax established in that episode). Janeway's newly commissioned Voyager joins forces with Captain DeSoto and the Hood (seen in "Tin Man"), while the Maquis cells are run by Chakotay and Cal Hudson team up (Hudson from "The Maquis"; this story will show how and why Tuvok infiltrated the Maquis prior to "Caretaker"). Finally, Picard's Enterprise will fight alongside the Klingon ship the I.K.S. Gorkon, a ship I introduce in Diplomatic Implausibility, captained by Klag (from "A Matter of Honor"). The final part will contain elements from each of the three previous parts as well, and include another team-up that I think fans will really get a kick out of.
