Quinto On Playing Spock

As far as Zachary Quinto was concerned, there was no need to compete with Leonard Nimoy when it came to playing Spock.

As reported by SFX, Quinto didn't feel pressure when it came to playing Spock, even with the long history of the character as originally played by Nimoy. "There will never be another Leonard Nimoy," said Quinto. "This is an incredible man and an incredible actor who really endeared himself to millions of people because of his portrayal of this character. And in a lot of ways that takes the pressure off me, because I can't compete with that! I have no control over that. I simply have a relationship with this character based on my understanding of where he is, in his perspective and his point of view."

It helped that Quinto had faith and trust in the script and J.J. Abrams. "...the script [that] Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wrote, it moved me immensely the first time I read it, and again subsequently as I immersed myself in it," said Quinto. "So I don't really feel like I have a lot to prove. Leonard was very supportive of me from the very beginning and I was in the most capable hands I could possibly be in to make this movie with J.J. Abrams and the people that surround him at Bad Robot productions."

Being free from that pressure mean that Quinto could concentrate on discovering the character Spock. "So for me it came down to a question of showing up to work and living in the moment, really tracking where those moments lead this character through this story."

And speaking of Abrams, in an interview with The Guardian's OrganGrinder Blog, he spoke about his reasons for choosing to do Star Trek XI. "I think it was the opportunity to tell a story that was based on a world and characters that I felt were just compelling and optimistic and the opportunity to treat that universe with a kind of energy and excitement and the resources we had," said Abrams. "It didn't feel like a classic reboot or prequel. It is a brand new thing inspired by characters that are poised to make a big comeback."
