Grand Slam Convention Report, Part One

By Christian
April 10, 2000 - 11:44 PM

Over at the Trek Nation, we've put up a report by Jeff 'Koganuts' Koga dealing with the two big fan events taking place during the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of April in California - Creation's Grand Slam VIII convention and RanDoM Flight's Champagne Cruise. Here's how Jeff starts his report:

While the official STAR TREK site has already reported about every single actor who appeared onstage at Creation's Grand Slam convention, I've decided to focus on highlights from some selected actors instead. I don't think they'll be reporting on the RanDoM Flight Cruise though, so consider this as a scoop. [grin]

I've been doing STAR TREK conventions for almost ten years now, and have attended all but two of Creation's Grand Slam conventions thus far. Creation is the biggest convention organizer out there, and while they seem to attract the top names in talent, they have unfortunately had a tendency to treat both the fans and talent as commodities. If you ever attend a Creation convention knowing that fact and the way they operate, you're that much better off. Because even though they claim to have organized conventions since the 1970s, they still can't find a way of running the autograph lines to everyone's satisfaction.

Which is why it's tremendously refreshing, as a convention veteran, for me to have attended the RanDoM Flight Cruise. But more about that later...

Today Jeff's already put up his report about Day One, featuring extensive descriptions of the appearances by Ethan Phillips, Robert O'Reilly (Gowron) and J.G. Hertzler (Martok), Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat) and Louise Fletcher (Kai Winn). In addition, he's put up a Miscellany page, containing a recollection of all the times he asked actors for a personal message to their internet fans. Tomorrow and on Wednesday the Grand Slam report will be updated with the Day Two report and an account of the RanDoM Flight cruise.
