'Star Trek: New Worlds' and 'Starfleet Command' publisher Interplay Entertainment announced today that Star Trek: Shattered Universe' is currently in development. The game is expected on the Playstation 2 in the fourth quarter of 2001.

The game is a space-based shoot-em-up that takes place in Star Trek's alternate universe, first seen in the Original Series' 'Mirror, Mirror' and several episodes of Deep Space Nine. It takes place after the events in 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' and features Captain Sulu's Excelsior trapped in the dark mirror universe.

Players will get the chance to fly a fighter to aid the Excelsior as it searches for a way home. New technology can be found in order to upgrade fighters with additions such as a Romulan cloaking device. Mahy different races are also due to appear. The game will feature familiar Star Trek machines like the Doomsday Device and the Guardian of Forever, also taken from the Original Series.

Game developers Starsphere Intereactive was formed by two game designers in 1997. It has previously developed 'You Don't Know Jack I and II' and 'Chessmaster II' for Playstation.

Captain Sulu was first shown in command of the Excelsior in 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country,' and made another appearance in the Voyager episode 'Flashback.' In addition, he was featured in audiobooks such as 'Cacophony', and last year was the subject of a fan campaign to convince Paramount to have Series V feature the Excelsior. While the fan campaign was not successful, supporters of it will undoubtedly be happy to see Suly appear again in this fashion.
