Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and his wife Susan have donated $1 million to refurbish the Griffith Observatory, the Los Angeles-based astronomy center that was also featured in the Voyager episode 'Future's End'.

Nimoy and his wife became the first individuals to make a contribution to the renovation effort of the Observatory, AP reported. About $63 million is needed to give the 66-year old landmark a face lift, two-thirds of which have already been donated by various corporations and foundations. The renovation is scheduled to begin next year and is expected to be completed by late 2004.

"By observing the sky and pondering our place in the universe, people gain a new perspective on their daily lives," Nimoy said today. "Griffith Observatory gives its visitors that opportunity. It is a Los Angeles icon, one which we need to ensure will be here for generations to come."

The Griffith Observatory was featured in the two-part Voyager episode 'Future's End', in which the crew travelled back to the year 1996. At the observatory, away team members Tom Paris and Tuvok meet Rain Robinson, a SETI researcher who discovers Voyager in orbit around Earth.
