Meaney, who appeared on both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, will make his debut in "Underground", which is likely to air in early September, GateWorld reported.

The actor will play Cowen, the leader of the Genii, a community of humans who appear to live a simple existence as farmers. The Genii agree to form an alliance with the Stargate: Atlantis team against the show's recurring enemy, the Wraith, but the team's new friends are not everything they seem to be.

The above photo shows Meaney with series stars Joe Flanigan, who plays Major John Sheppard, and David Hewlett as Dr. Rodney McKay. "Underground" was directed by Brad Turner (24, Andromeda) from a script by Peter DeLuise (Stargate). Following "Underground", Meaney's character will appear in a mid-season two-part episode, "The Storm" and "The Eye".

In addition to Meaney's appearance on Atlantis, Jolene Blalock (T'Pol) is slated to reprise the role of Jaffa priestess Ishta in the original Stargate's eighth season. Her episode, entitled "Sacrifices", will likely air later this year.
