Thief Swipes The Captain's Chair

The crew of the Next Generation has bested the Klingons, Q and the Romulans, but filming 'Star Trek X: Nemesis' put them into a danger no crew is equipped to face: chair thieves.

It might sound like a junior officer's prank, but according to the Flagship, wily thieves crept onto the sound stage and nabbed the Captain's chair.

The theft meant the set decorators needed to work at warp speed to build a new seat - at a cost of $15,000. It is thought that the original would fetch much more on the black market - enough to do any self-respecting Ferengi proud.

A piece of the Original Series was stolen in 1996, when it was on display at a convention. Captain Picard's first Next Generation chair was also stolen, just before 'Star Trek: Generations' was filmed. As the focal point of a starship bridge, the Captain's chairs are highly prized items.

"The studio suspects an inside job, but they've yet to catch the culprits," remarked Tom Cuneff of People Magazine. No information was available about whether the studio had scanned for subspace interference, or if Ferengi involvement was suspected.

The original article can be found here at the Flagship. Thanks to Tony for this news.
