By Amy
January 3, 2001 - 7:20 AM

The entertainment world suffered another blow when Tony and Emmy award winning actor Ray Walston passed away on Monday at the age of 86 in his home in Beverly Hills after a short illness. Walston, an actor who specialized in playing canny and cantankerous characters, has had a long and varied career spanning over five decades, will best be remembered by most for his role as Uncle Martin in "My Favorite Martian." However, for many Trek fans, he'll forever be remembered as Boothby, the Star Fleet Academy groundskeeper and mentor to would-be and actual starship captains, including Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard.

SyFy World has dedicated him a place on their Memorial Page. Walston is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Ruth, and a daughter
