UPN Ratings On The Up

The debut of Enterprise helped UPN to a strong performance in the ratings over the 2001-2 season.

The network outperformed major rival The WB in nearly all major ratings categories, and showed the biggest growth in viewers of any television network according to Media Week.

UPN's average rating among adults aged 18-34 was its best ever - up 19% to 1.9 million viewers. Among adults aged 18-49, the network scored its best result for five years. The total number of viewers tuning in to UPN rose 11% from the same period last year - up to 4.29 million viewers.

The network is also expected to meet strong projected sales in the current advertising upfront period - where networks sell advertising space for the Fall season.

Thanks to the fact that its advertising inventory is now sold in combination with fellow Viacom-owned network CBS, analysts expect that UPN will see an increase in upfront sales of as much as $75 million.

All networks are expected to perform much better than the same time last year, when the advertising market experienced a significant downturn. This year, advertisers are much more optimistic about the economy and are eager to buy up valuable advertising space before rivals.

More information about UPN's ratings over the 2001-2 season, as well as a comparison with the other major networks, can be found here at MediaWeek. Information on the strong start to the upfront market can be found by following this link.
