Shore Leave 39 Is Coming Soon!

3 min read

This year, instead of being held in August, as has been the case for the last few years, Shore Leave 39 will take place July 7-9 in Hunt Valley, Maryland.

A big draw for Trek fans at Shore Leave is the guest list. This year’s celebrity guest list features two Star Trek: The Next Generation actors; Marina Sirtis and Michael Dorn.

Other celebrity guests this year include Kevin Sussman (The Big Bang Theory, Weeds, Ugly Betty, A.I. Artificial Intelligence), Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Falling Skies, The Man in the High Castle), Luciana Carro (Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Falling Skies), Jodelle Ferland (Dark Matter, Atlantis, Supernatural, Twilight), Marc Bendavid (Dark Matter, Bitten, Degrassi: The Next Generation), and Mike Dopud (Stargate SG-1, Dark Matter, Battlestar Galactica).

Authors are well-represented at Shore Leave as always. This year’s attendees include: Rigel Ailur, Lorraine Anderson, Derek Tyler Attico, Diane Lee Baron, Christopher L. Bennett, T.A. Chafin, John Coffren, Russ Colchamiro, Greg Cox, Michael Critzer, Kathleen David, Peter A. David, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Mary Fan, Kelli Fitzpatrick, Michael Jan Friedman, Dave Galanter, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Andrew Hiller, Heather E. Hutsell, Amy Imhoff, Bob Jones, Stephen Kozeniewski, David Mack, Kelly Meding, Susan Oleson, Scott Pearson, TJ Perkins, Roberta Rogow, Aaron Rosenberg, Jenifer P Rosenberg, Melissa Scott, Hildy Silverman, Dayton Ward, Laura Ward, Howard Weinstein, Richard C. White, and Steven H. Wilson.

Shore Leave 39 also features science guests, artists, and performers.

Writing workshops abound at Shore Leave and are often led by Star Trek authors. These workshops help guide new writers from crafting a story to (hopefully) getting it sold.

On Saturday night, it’s time to dress up for the Shore Leave Masquerade. Dress up and perform for the audience, and you might win a prize! The Masquerade is open to children and adults alike, with the young fans going onstage first.

Fans interested in the heavens can take part in Stargazing, while fans who would rather gather to sing and dance (and drink!) can meet at Vic’s Place.

A highlight for Trek fans is the Meet the Pros Party on Friday night, where fans can mingle with their favorite Trek authors and get their books autographed.

Shore Leave 2017 features a dealer’s room, a game room, fan panels and photo ops, including a TARDIS photo booth.

In addition, the Eighth Annual Robbie Greenberger Memorial Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament will take place on Saturday evening.

Another annual staple of Shore Leave is the Mystery Trekkie Theater 3000 which closes out the convention. This year will see the finale of the popular event which parodies a Trek episode. The event is hosted by Peter David, Robert Greenberger, and Michael Jan Friedman.

One of my personal favorites is the Afternoon Tea, an add-on extra, where attendees sip tea and eat scones, tea cookies and finger sandwiches.

It looks like it’s shaping up to be a good convention, and it’s one to which many fans return year after year. For more information on Shore Leave 39, head to the link located here.
