Schallert Passes

Actor William Schallert, best-known to Trek fans for his appearance on an episode of the original series, is dead at the age of ninety-three.

Schallert died on Sunday in Pacific Palisades, California, according to his son Edwin.

With a career spanning decades, Schallert was a familiar face on the television screen. He was best-known for his role as the sitcom father of Patty Duke on The Patty Duke Show, which ran from 1963-1966. Before that, he was teacher Leander Pomfritt on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Schallert was a guest star on many shows from the 1950s through the 1990s.

Star Trek fans remember him as Nilz Baris in The Trouble with Tribbles, and Schallert also had a role as the Bajoran musician Varani in the Sanctuary episode of Deep Space Nine.

Schallert married actress Rosemarie Diann Waggner (known professionally as Leah Waggner) in 1949. His wife died last year. The couple had four sons; Edwin, Joseph, Mark and Brendan. Schallert is also survived by seven grandchildren.
