Why Abrams Cut Back His Lens Flares

1 min read

Trek fans were well aware of J.J. Abrams‘ love of lens flares, and those who went to see the latest Abrams project, Star Wars: The Force Awakens soon realized that he had used much less of the filming trick than usual.

The reason was that someone close to him said “enough already!”

Abrams’ wife Katie McGrath, A PR executive, is the one that told Abrams that enough was enough. “There was one scene in Star Trek Into Darkness where you literally couldn’t see what was going on,” explained Abrams during a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “And it was a very important, emotional scene. And Alice Eve, the actress, was somewhere behind this crazy lens flare glaring and Katie just looked at me and said, ‘OK, I think this is it. At this point, you have to absolutely stop doing that.'”

The lens flare discussion begins at the 1:45 minute mark in the video below.
