George Takei and his husband Brad were the recipient of a Vanguard Award last weekend.

The award was given out at the 45th Anniversary Gala Vanguard Awards.

The Vanguard Awards, presented by the Los Angeles LGBT Center, honors “some of the incredible people who have made a real difference in the lives of LGBT people in Los Angeles and all over the world.”

Takei and Brad received the International Vanguard Award. Married for six years, the pair are “fierce champions for the LGBT community.”

“I started in the business back in the ’50s when LGBT people did not exist on television or in movies,” said Takei. “Compare that to what we have today.”

Other Award winners included Marvel (Corporate Vanguard Award) and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky (Rand Schrader Distinguished Achievement Award).
