Star Trek into Darkness Benedict Cumberbatch will be replacing Guy Pearce in Black Mass.

Pearce left the project due to scheduling issues.

Black Mass is the story of Irish mobster Whitey Bulger, his brother Billy, FBI Agent John Connolly and the FBI’s witness protection program. The movie is based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob.

Cumberbatch will take on the role of Billy Bulger, Whitey’s “law-abiding brother and a Massachusetts State Senator.” Whitey will be played by Johnny Depp, and Connolly will be played by Joel Edgerton.

The real-life Whitey Bulger is currently serving a double life term plus five years, while Connolly is serving forty years in prison.

Black Mass is expected to be released next year.

  1. I like the guy (especially as Sherlock) but he sure is odd-looking. You hit the nail on the head haha.
