Yesterday, TrekToday reported on Leonard Nimoy‘s Piers Morgan Live appearance;, today there is a video clip from the show.

In the short clip, Nimoy explains that people today are better informed about the perils of smoking, and that attitudes have changed.

“The good news now is that people have begun to understand that smoking is dangerous,” he said.

That wasn’t always the case. In fact, one smoking campaign, explained Nimoy, claimed that “more doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarettes.”

Nimoy was a heavy smoker at one point. “I was smoking a couple packs a day,” he said. “I tell people that I was Olympic championship smoking. If there had been a championship in the addition, I could have qualified. I could smoke in the shower!”

It didn’t help that smoking was promoted, with organizations like the Army providing free cigarettes to their soldiers, as Nimoy found out during his two years in the service.

“Today we have a different type of culture, fortunately, and people can be helped to understand that it’s not a good thing to do.”

  1. Leonard, Leonard, just please don’t pull a Yul Brynner on us. There’s no Fal Tor Pan in this continuity.
