William Shatner brought what he claimed was the kidney stone that caused him to be taken to the hospital from the set of Boston Legal with him to an appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly on ABC last week.

"My wife said, 'It's a girl!'" Shatner joked of the large object on the talk show (transcript courtesy VRRRM.com). He pulled the black stone from the pocket of a jacket complimented by Kelly Ripa, who along with Regis Philbin asked about his experience with the condition.

"I was doing a scene and I was feeling uncomfortable. And then I got on my knees...I broke out into a cold sweat," the Captain Kirk actor told them. "I got in the ambulance and the siren goes off, and the producer tells me that -- he saw me off, waved goodbye, went up to his office, the phone rang, and it was a tabloid." He said he received morphine for the pain, joking that the doctor asked for his autograph before administering it.

Shatner showed off photos of his wife and horses, one of whom is named "Boston Legal" in honour of the show for which Shatner won his Emmy this year - the same year the horse won a world championship. When Philbin asked whether he remembered the old days when people used to say "Beam me up, Scotty"," Shatner acknowledged, "That does sound familiar, yes." Asked what people say now, he said, "Beam me up, Denny!"

Of Denny Crane's relationship with Alan Shore, the character played by James Spader on Boston Legal, Shatner said, "He wants me, a lot...he needs nurturing, and he suckles at my breast a lot." Philbin then showed a clip of what he labeled "a tender moment" in which Shore discussed what Denny's friendship meant to him and Denny replied, "I'm not having sex with you."
