It appears 20% of the Dutch population have lost their minds. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, a politician here in the Netherlands recently initiated a debate about the position of our monarchy, proposing that some of the more archaic elements of our system would be changed. He believed (as I do) that the Queen should not have any influence on politics at all, something which she does have now, as she is actually the one who dedides who can start forming a government, and as she chairs one of the most important advising bodies the country has.
Yesterday (on Queen's Day) I read in the newspaper that, according to a recent poll, 20% of all Dutch people believe this politician should publicly apologise to the Queen for starting this public discussion. Surely this can't be for real? I was already amazed at the almost hysterical reaction following his suggestion, but the thought that he would have to apologise for just starting a debate on the Queen's position is absolutely ridiculous. If I were a cynic I'd almost comment that maybe this shows how uncertain this 20% of the population actually is about the Queen's position...
