Star Trek S.C.E. #4 The response to Pocket Books' new electronic novel series 'Star Trek: S.C.E.' appears to have been encouraging, as they have just released a fourth book in the series, featuring the return of the Tholians - and also as of today, you can buy this and all the previous Trek eBooks right here at TrekToday!

'Interphase: Book One' is the title of the new novel, which was written by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore. Besides the U.S.S. da Vinci, the main 'S.C.E.' starship, the book also includes a starship familiar from the Original Series:

More than a century ago, the U.S.S. Defiant disappeared with all hands into an interspatial rift deep in Tholian territory. Now the derelict ship has been seen drifting in and out of ordinary space, and the Tholian authorities have reluctantly agreed to let Starfleet retrieve the Defiant from the rift. Perhaps, at long last, the lost ship can be brought home and its valiant crew paid their final respects.

Captain David Gold and an S.C.E. team from the U.S.S. da Vinci succeed in boarding the Defiant, but their investigation soon uncovers a dangerous secret. For more than a hundred years, an ancient super-weapon has been hidden away within the scarred and lifeless starship, along with evidence of a long-forgotten atrocity -- evidence that could ignite a vast interstellar war!

If you want to find out more about the book, including an excerpt consisting of the first chapter of the novel, please click here to go to the web site of Digital Goods. The 103-page novel can also be bought there for the price of $3.50, and is available in the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format.

The Star Trek eBook series was launched in August 2000 (story), with the release of 'Star Trek S.C.E. Book One - The Belly of the Beast', written by Dean Wesley Smith. The book series chronicles the adventures of the crew of the U.S.S. Da Vinci, one of the ships of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, overseen by Captain Montgomery Scott. The initial novels featured guest appearances by TNG characters such as Geordi LaForge, while the crew of the Da Vinci itself also includes several characters previously seen on TNG and DS9.

Initial sales results for the books were quite promising, with 'Belly of the Beast' even reaching 2nd place on the BarnesAndNoble.com sales charts. This happened despite the rather small size of the books - even though they cost about as much as the regular Star Trek paperback novels, they are only about a third of their size. Considering eBooks do not carry printing costs with them, it could perhaps be considered surprising that they are even more expensive per page than regular novels.

Besides 'Interphase, Book One', Pocket Books currently has 3 more Star Trek eBooks planned for the near future. Next month, they will release 'Interphase, Book Two', which concludes the story started in Book One. May and June will see the release of the two-part 'Invincible' book series, written by David Mack and Keith R.A. DeCandido, in which the "S.C.E.'s top officer, Commander Sonya Gomez, is assigned to supervise a project on the crystal planet of Sarindar--helping the reclusive and hostile Nalori harness a valuable new ore."

From now on, we will be offering the Star Trek eBooks for sale directly via TrekToday, in cooperation with DigiGoods. In this way, you will be able to follow the adventures of the U.S.S. DaVinci in the instantly readable Adobe Acrobat-format, and support TrekToday in the process, which is of course something we'd appreciate tremendously.
