Former Quantum Leap star to play song-and-dance man Tony Hunter in the new stage musical Dancing in the Dark, a play which is based on the movie The Band Wagon.

As reported at Playbill.com, Scott Bakula will be taking on a role once played by Fred Astaire in the 1953 movie about a faded showman.

The musical is directed by Gary Griffin and choreographed by Warren Carlyle. It will make its world premiere at the Old Globe in San Diego on March 4th and run through April 13th.

Dancing in the Dark is about Tony Hunter, a Hollywood star whose career is waning. He is teamed up with Jeffrey Cordova, an actor-manager, and together they create a new musical.

Bakula is no stranger to the stage. He earned a Tony award nomination in 1988 for his role in Romance, Romance, and has appeared in other Broadway shows such as Marilyn, (where he played Joe DiMaggio) and Is There Life After High School?. In 2006, he appeared at the Ford's Theater in Shenandoah, playing the patriarch Charlie Anderson.
