Avery Brooks To Star In 'The Exonerated'

Avery Brooks (Benjamin Sisko) is set to take the Off-Broadway play The Exonerated to Philadelphia next month.

The former Deep Space Nine actor will appear during the play's October 28 - November 2 run at the Merriam Theatre, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The ensemble cast also includes Academy Award-nominee Lynn Redgrave (Gods and Monsters).

The Exonerated tells the story of six death row inmates who are in fact innocent. Playwrights Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen travelled around the United States to interview 40 prisoners who had been on death row and were found innocent. All the dialogue in the play comes directly from the interviews or official court documents.

Acclaimed as "The #1 Play of the Year" by Margo Jefferson of The New York Times, The Exonerated is the winner of the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play. During its run at the 45 Bleecker Theatre, the play's rotating cast has included Trek alumni such as Bebe Neuwirth (Nurse Lanel), Ben Vereen (Edward LaForge) and John Savage (Captain Ransom).

Tickets for the Philadelphia run at the Merriam Theatre can be booked through Ticketmaster. Thanks to Doug Wilson for this!
