Patrick Stewart, who went from fame as Star Trek: The Next Generation's Captain Picard to The X-Men's Professor Xavier, may be in the running for another coveted franchise role: that of Jor-El in the new Superman film.

Cinescape reported on a story from IESB.net saying that according to a source, Stewart is the first choice of director Bryan Singer to play Superman's father.

Singer, Stewart's X-Men director, allegedly wants to cast well-known actors in the supporting roles with an unknown playing Superman, following in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve from previous films and Tom Welling in the current series Smallville. Welling is also rumoured to be in the running to star in the upcoming film.

Legendary actor Marlon Brando played Jor-El, the Kryptonian scientist who sent his son Kal-El to Earth when his planet faced destruction, opposite Reeve.

Neither Singer nor Stewart has commented upon this rumour. The original Cinescape article is here, following up on the original story from IESB.net.
