Popular fantasy novelist John M. Ford died on Monday at age 49. The recipient of a kidney transplant, Ford had been ailing for many years from complications of diabetes.

Ford was the author of Star Trek novels How Much For Just the Planet? and The Final Reflection (rereleased in 2004 as part of The Hand of Kahless anthology).

SFF.net has a memorial thread with comments by other Star Trek novelists, including Susan Shwartz and Esther Friesner. Ford was said to be conversant in Klingon and had written Klingon manuals for FASA's Star Trek RPG.

Ford's friend Neil Gaiman has several lengthy comments in his blog, as well as the text of one of Ford's final e-mails.

At Making Light, where Ford often posted comments, there is a long tribute thread.

Novelist Robert Jordan has a tribute as well at his blog.
