Stewart To Poke Fun At Persona In Sitcom

Patrick Stewart will appear in the new series Extras with comedian Ricky Gervais. The UK's Sky News reported that Stewart will join a list of other celebrities including Samuel L. Jackson, Kate Winslet and Ben Stiller on the BBC sitcom. Each of the celebrities will play a warped version of himself or herself.

Though Stewart is best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation and his role as Professor Xavier in the X-Men films, Gervais plans to poke fun at his Shakespearean performances, claimed Sky, which said that the comedian and his writing partner, Stephen Merchant, have written a special episode for Stewart.

"In every episode, Ricky finds some way to mock his guest stars by taking the mickey out of their public persona," a series insider told The Sun, a British tabloid. "Patrick will be no different. He's a serious Shakespearian actor so that's ripe for the picking."

One possibility for humour may come from the fact that Stewart was not the producers' first choice for a guest appearance. The script involving him was written after Jude Law pulled out due to other work commitments.
