Grace Lee Whitney Supports 'Excelsior' Series

This past weekend, Grace Lee Whitney (Yeoman Janice Rand) appeared at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas in order to promote her autobiography, The Longest Trek: My Tour of the Galaxy. At the con, which was attended by over 900 fans, Whitney made some interesting statements about what and who she would like to see in the new Star Trek series - herself!

"All the fans are pushing for a new series," said Whitney, going on to say that she would like to work with George Takei (Hikaru Sulu) on a new Star Trek series, which presumably she would like to be set on the U.S.S. Excelsior. "The series would take off where 'Voyager' left off. I'm the poster girl for the geriatric generation."

George Takei has been lobbying for a 'Star Trek: Excelsior' for years, and last year an extensive online fan campaign was even launched. However, after the campaign failed to get more than a few dozen people to attend a protest rally at Paramount interest in the campaign seemed to die down quickly, and over the past few months the Deep Space Nine: Horizons campaign has been featured in the news more prominently.

Still, according to Whitney there is still a large fascination for the original Star Trek series, something which she believes is due to the approachability of its stars. "They've been watching us on film for 35 years," she said. "And who else can they go to a convention with and talk and laugh and carry on?"

The original report on the convention can be found here at Jam! Showbiz. Click here to buy 'The Longest Trek', and here for information on the 'Excelsior' campaign.
