Hello World!

It's hard to fathom that summer is almost over and my kids go back to school on Monday. They are, naturally, not all that thrilled about it, but because they'll be attending different schools this year - the younger one is entering middle school, the older one high school - there hasn't been as much grumbling as usual despite all the orientations. It was a gorgeous, cool week here in Washington, DC - and sorry I've been away from this column for so long, we were at Bethany Beach in Delaware enjoying the shore - but it's supposed to be nearly 100 tomorrow, which I suppose means we will postpone going to the Maryland Renaissance Festival until later in the fall.

There has been a lot of Star Trek news in the past few weeks - Zachary Quinto's casting, Nimoy confirming that he but not Shatner will appear in J.J. Abrams' movie, a HD-DVD set of the original series on the way. I'm curious: how come people who were so distraught about the changes George Lucas made in the Star Wars films seem mostly to like the Star Trek remastery? Don't get me wrong, I have no objection to anything CBS is doing, but then, I thought Lucas trimming back the Ewoks and replacing the song at the end of The Return of the Jedi made everything else worthwhile. I'm having a much harder idea with the concept of a different Spock in a feature film. I like the fan productions on the internet, and I like Quinto on Heroes, but I'm really resisting the idea of a prequel with those characters I love.
