Ryan Returns To 'Shark' Pool Tonight

When Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine)'s Shark returns to CBS tonight, the actress will be counting her blessings.

"I've been very lucky," Ryan told The Winnipeg Sun. "I was never a science-fiction fan prior to [Star Trek: Voyager]. "But I was fortunate to have an incredibly well-written and well-developed character [and] I also was able to break out of the Star Trek world into other acting jobs, which isn't always the case."

Ryan went from Voyager to the well-reviewed Boston Public, and now Shark with highly regarded film actor James Woods. "We come from very different worlds," admitted Ryan. "He comes from the feature-film world and I come from TV." She called Star Trek "about as TV as you can get" and explained that while improvisation was forbidden on Voyager, Woods "is 99% improvisation. He paraphrases. He just goes off. It was something I wasn't used to when we were doing the pilot."

Though she had to adjust to his style, "it has turned out great", Ryan added. She is a bit concerned about Shark's new time slot, pitting it against both Brothers & Sisters and football. "It is a vote of confidence for us," said Ryan, who said that viewers shouldn't expect Woods' character Sebastian Stark and her character Jessica Devlin to become lovers although the actress is expecting a baby.

"The banter is what's fun, and fun to play, frankly...once they sleep together, you either have a relationship, which is infinitely less fun - I mean, it just is - or you have discomfort because it's awkward," she explained.
