'Starfleet Command III' For PC Announced

Activision announced yesterday that 'Starfleet Command III' is in development for PC systems.

Described as a 'tactical starship simulator' the game was announced, with the official logo and first two screen shots, at the official Star Trek Gaming site. It will be the first game in the series to be set in the Next Generation Universe.

"The Starfleet Command series captures the spirit and style of Star Trek by offering large-scale, ship-to-ship tactical combat," said the executive vice president of Activision Worldwide Studios, Larry Goldberg. "Star Trek Starfleet Command III reinvents the legendary series by bringing it into the Star Trek: The Next Generation universe and introducing powerful new ship customisation, more in-depth story missions, and a streamlined interface."

Players can expect more of the same type of game play seen in previous outings of the series; the ability to optimise their ship and allocate power to their ship's systems for different types of strategies such as hit-and-run maneuvers, ambushes or direct assaults will all be included. But the micromangment of the starship will be simplified, meaning the game places more emphasis on combat. The ability to significantly customise weapons, shields, engines and other systems will be available for the first time. And a new RPG-like element will be present; with crew members gaining experience and skills throughout the game.

Three single player campaigns will be included in the game. These will let gamers play as Klingons, Romulans and the Federation. Starting out with a small limited ship, players will soon gain points to be spent on upgrades and better crew. 25 vessels from the Next Generation will all be available to play, including the Sovereign-class starship, the Romulan Warbird and the Borg Cube. A multi player skirmish mode will offer instant action; in team or free for all modes.

The game is expected to be released into stores around Christmas. More details about the game are available here at the official Star Trek site.
