Speaking at NASA's Ames Research Center for National Coming Out Day, George Takei (Sulu) told a group of NASA employees that they were really boldly going where no man has gone before."

"You are the real McCoy," Takei explained, according to SpaceRef.com, which said that the actor is the only openly gay person to have an asteroid named after him.

"There is strength in diversity," said Takei, echoing a theme made popular by Star Trek and its concept of infinite diversity in infinite combinations. He expressed frustration with "laws that have become our barbed wire in the gay community", saying that it was normal for gays and lesbians to want to marry, share homes and property and serve in the military.

"Those barbed wire fences will be torn down," added Takei, who lived for several years of his childhood in a Japanese-American internment camp surrounded by such fences. He remains proud of the patriotism of Japanese-Americans who fought for the US while their families were facing prejudice and incarceration at home.
