First 'Endgame' Reviews

Though the Voyager series finale won't be airing until this Wednesday, Paramount already sent out 'Endgame' review tapes several weeks ago. The first analyses of the final episode appeared on the internet today.

John Mark Eberhart at the Kansas City Star opened his review by commenting on the lack of originality of the episode. "Plagiarism, as we all know, is wrong - except when it comes to plagiarizing yourself," he wrote. "Why bother crafting new ideas when you've already hatched some great ones? That's the mind-set behind the finale for Star Trek: Voyager, which will end Wednesday, after seven seasons, with a two-hour epilogue that borrows heavily from previous Star Trek universes."

Despite this, Eberhardt did think Voyager's final two hours were satisfying to watch. "This was never the greatest Star Trek, but Janeway and crew flew a pretty dependable ship. Voyager goes out the same way it came in, and in much the same manner it existed for seven years: It was pretty good science-fiction TV, charting a course somewhere between derivative and impressive."

Ken Tucker at Entertainment Weekly was about as positive. "Robert Picardo, as the holographic Doc, remains wittily prissy and priapic to the end, there's a satisfying payoff to this season's pregnancy of B'Elanna Torres and you've gotta like a space opera that has Janeway yelling 'Just get these Klingons off my tail!'"

As Tucker wasn't a Star Trek fan, he'd invited his neighbour over to watch with him, and as it turned out the finale will appeal equally to both Trekkers and non-fans. "When Mark and I turned off the VCR and showed each other our notes," he wrote, "we'd arrived at the same letter grade, a fair measure of Voyager's success to fan and casual viewer alike. I hope our vibes are similarly attuned when I plant that new tree on the border of our property."

In the full review, the episode is awarded a B+. It can be found in the new edition of Entertainment Weekly, while Jason Davidson's Star Trek News has a partial transcript. The full Kansas City Star review can be found here on the newspaper's web site.
