The show has never looked better, but the price is too high, say reviewers.

Reviews of the recently released HD-DVD Star Trek were generally favorable. "Star Trek has truly been brought into the high-definition era with this box set as the episodes have been restored absolutely beautifully," reports ps3center.net. "Star Trek, simply put, has never looked this good before. An immense amount of work was done to restore these episodes to remove any type of dirt, cracks, or hiccups seen in the original film prints. Piece by piece though the arduous task was completed and the results are simply breath-taking." Praise was added for the musical score, which has been completely re-recorded. They gave it a rating of 9.2 overall. For the entire review, go here.

IGN felt that fans weren't getting their money's worth, in spite of a near-perfect HD transfer. They suggested that "If the HD prices cause hesitation, the DVD versions will suffice until CBS/Paramount dips into the well again." They did acknowledge the "superior 5.1 sound quality and re-recorded score" which would "more than compensate for the inconsistent HD showing. A final score of eight out of ten was given for the set. For more on their review, head here.

The Man Room had both cheers and jeers for the box set. Cheers were for the "wonderful restoration that respects source material" and as with the ps3center review, the re-recording of the musical score. Jeers were given for the pricing, which is "atrocious" and could have been avoided by using fewer disks. The flimsiness of the case was also cited as a problem. In spite of these issues, the set was rated a nine out of ten. Head here for the entire review.

Justin Sluss of High Def Disc News said that "Overall this is a decent HD DVD release but does have a pretty high price tag to go with that 10 disc HD DVD Combo Format box set. I can only recommend this to fans of the show who aren’t going to complain about the new restoration." His review can be found here.

The original series remastered HD-DVD set goes on sale next week. It can be purchased here.
