Jonathan Frakes (Riker) will direct a segment of Masters of Science Fiction based on a short story by "City on the Edge of Forever" writer Harlan Ellison and scripted by Ellison and Oscar nominee Josh Olson.

"The Discarded", explained Ellison on his web site bulletin board, will film in Vancouver starting next month. "I'll likely go up there for the shoot," Ellison stated.

The 1959 story is about a group of humans exiled from Earth for what are considered hideous mutations, who are then begged for assistance when an incurable disease strikes the planet. The story was collected in Ellison's anthology Paingod and Other Delusions.

Bits of News reported earlier this year on Masters of Science Fiction being picked up by ABC to bring classics by writers such as Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov to television. The show is produced by IDT Entertainment, which also produces Showtime's Masters of Horror.
