Braga's 'Voyager' Flashback

Brannon Braga's aim over the past seven years as a writer/producer on Voyager is clear: "I tried to tell good stories."

In a recent interview with Sci-Fi Wire, Braga was asked to evaluate his contribution to the series. "I think that Voyager had a certain cinematic quality in its later years," he said. "It had more sophisticated storytelling, and I hope that we took some risks with the medium of television and with the Star Trek format."

Certainly, there have been many changes to the series over the course of its run. For one, the character of Seven on Nine was introduced, and it is this that Braga remembers "creatively as being a moment of triumph." Played by Jeri Ryan, the ex-Borg made her first appearance in the two-part episode 'Scorpion,' written by Braga and Joe Menosky.

Although Seven's debut was a big shake-up for the series, Braga felt it paid off. "It was a big moment just in terms of creating a brand new character that was very controversial, but ended up becoming very popular," he said.

Brannon Braga first appeared on the Trek scene in The Next Generation's fourth season, contributing to the teleplay of 'Reunion.' He joined the staff of the series, writing many episodes, including the series finale, 'All Good Things,' which he co-wrote with Ronald D. Moore. Braga moved over to Voyager once TNG ended, and worked his way up through the ranks to become Executive Producer. Together with Rick Berman he created the latest Trek series: Enterprise.
