Star Trek on HD-DVD Will Arrive By Year's End

The original Star Trek series will be the first CBS property to be released on HD-DVD, the company has announced.

HomeMediaRetailing.com reported that CBS Corp. had formed two new divisions, one to produce DVDs and another to license merchandise. CBS Home Entertainment will release the original Star Trek on DVD/HD-DVD combo discs during the latter part of 2007.

"The reason we chose to do that is to give us the ability to make high-definition transfers of the show available to people who don't yet have high-definition players," said Ken Ross, who will head CBS Home Entertainment. The Hollywood Reporter also quoted Ross as saying that Blu-ray discs are expected to follow some time later, but no release date has been scheduled.

"With its inch-thick complete-season sets, TV-DVD transformed the industry for us," Ross explained. "It took players like us who are not in the feature film business, but in the TV production business, and made us real players to be reckoned with."

CBS Consumer Products will focus on new licensing deals and merchandise for CBS assets, which in addition to Star Trek includes current series like Survivor (soon to be a sponsor of camping gear) and The Amazing Race (soon to have its own line of luggage).
