Hello World!

Summer. The time of year when we all want spend hours lazing by the pool doing absolutely nothing. In a way, that's great - because there's certainly nothing to be seen on TV at this time of year.

During the summer, Australian TV networks air the shows they don't think will rate highly enough to be shown in the ratings period. A few, such as The West Wing and Gilmore Girls, do well enough (and are good enough) to survive into the ratings period, but usually the offerings at this time of year are things like 'When Pilots Eject' and US sitcoms which have already been axed.

This year is particularly bad, but there are two series that stand-out amongst the blooper specials and Friends re-runs - The Dead Zone and Scrubs. The Dead Zone (as I'm sure everyone is aware) comes from Michael Piller, and although I don't think it will become my favourite show of all time, it's quality entertainment. Scrubs is wonderful because a) it's funnier than the other 99% of "comedies" b) it doesn't have a laugh track and c) it's quite touching at times.

In contrast to the TV situation, the cinema has plenty on offer. I went to see Die Another Day recently, and although the theme song is especially dreadful, I thought the film was entertaining. Bad puns seemed to reach all-new heights this time round, though I'm not really sure I should be criticising other people for using bad puns.
