Nichelle Nichols, best-known as Lt. Uhura on the original series, is appearing in Tru Loved, which opens this week in limited theaters.

As reported by Black Voices, Nichols is appearing in Tru Loved, where she plays the grandmother of the only friend of sixteen-year-old Tru.

Tru, the lead character in Tru Loved, is having trouble adapting to a new neighborhood. Her parents are two lesbian women who have moved the teenager from the gay-friendly home in San Francisco, to a conservative, suburban community in Southern California.

Tru's only friend is a closeted football player, whose grandmother is played by Nichols. The friendship is strained when Tru starts her schools first Gay-Straight alliance.

According to actress Jasmine Guy (A Different World,) who plays Cynthia, mother of Tru's athlete friend, "This is an important story told in a beautiful way. No rhetoric, no preaching, no judgment. It's just a slice-of-life about what these young people are going through, and trying to deal with these changes in our society. They are having to accept and work through these issues without being able to speak to older generations about it a lot of the time."
