The first original scripted series on ABC Family, executive produced by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine co-creator Michael Piller and starring Deep Space Nine actress Nana Visitor (Kira), will debut with a two-hour pilot on Monday, June 20th.

The Futon Critic has published ABC Family's press release, which describes the series as a drama about a teenage girl trying to change her fortunes while working on a ranch faced with ruin in the high-stakes world of horse racing. The series is produced by Lions Gate Television in association with Piller Squared, the company founded by Michael Piller and his son Shawn, who co-produces The Dead Zone with his father and wrote "Death Wish" for Star Trek: Voyager. The Segan Company, founded by the Pillers' Dead Zone producing partner Lloyd Segan, co-produces as well.

In addition to Visitor and young series lead Genevieve Cortese, the show features Dennis Weaver, Greg Serano and Micah Alberti. Steve Miner directed the pilot from a teleplay by Michael and Shawn Piller. ABC Family has a preview here.

In addition, a new film starring Colm Meaney (Miles O'Brien) is receiving strong reviews. Layer Cake was given a grade of A by Entertainment Weekly, which praises star Daniel Craig and "Colm Meaney and George Harris as Craig's viciously loyal henchmen (one gets off on guns, the other revenge)." The film also stars Harry Potter's Michael Gambon.

The Associated Press describes Layer Cake as a "colorful, darkly comic world of British gangsters." The film opened in New York and Los Angeles last weekend after being featured at several film festivals. The movie's official web site is here.
