Hello World!

I never thought I'd actually be saying this, but if all goes well today will be the last hot day in a while, and I'm happier about it than I ever thought possible. Ten days of consecutive warm days have heated my place up to near-Sauna temperatures, and it's really no use trying to get the heat out - the windows are far too small, and half the day the sun is actually shining on them, so that isn't of much use. At least I don't live on the other side of the building: there the sun is shining directly on the windows almost all day long, and there they can't even be opened! Thank God conscription doesn't exist anymore here in the Netherlands: until five years ago, this building was actually in use by the army, and a dozen soldiers or so would have slept in the same space I now have for myself. If the Soviets had been smart, they would have invaded on a day like today, and all they would have needed to beat our soldiers would have been a mop.

Happy Birthday!

Today is the 63rd birthday of Yvonne Craig, best known for her role as Batgirl on the original 'Batman' series. However, she also appeared in the Original Series episode 'Whom Gods Destroy', as the mad Orion slave Girl Marta. As you may recall, a year ago Ms Craig was kind enough to provide us with a personal message to all her Star Trek fans, which I thought I'd reprint this year again:

"Thanks so much for all your support through the years and your continued interest in the Star Trek series and the character that I played - little did I know as I was being painted green each morning for the "Marta" scenes, that some 30 years later this character would still be a favorite of some of the fans - It's not easy being green (as a frog from Sesame Street once told me), but you have certainly made it much easier for me - THANKS".
