The move of Star Trek XI from Christmas Day to May of 2009 was not a result of the writer's strike, says Paramount spokesman, but a desire for more earning potential.

As reported at BusinessWeek.com, Star Trek XI was moved for economic reasons. "'Star Trek' will be finished by fall in time for its original release date, but studio executives decided to hold it until next summer. The film could pull in more money," said Michael Vollman, a Paramount spokesman. The official site has now been updated to reflect the change.

The strike did leave a few holes, however, in 2009's summer schedule, leaving the May 8th date open. Star Trek XI will open a week after 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the X-Men spin-off starring Hugh Jackman, and a week before Sony's Angels & Demons, the Ron Howard and Tom Hanks' follow-up to The Da Vinci Code.

"'Star Trek' is in fantastic shape," said Vollman. "This is all about box-office potential. Summer is where you see the 'Star Wars' and the 'Spider-Mans' and the 'Shreks' and the 'Transformers.' 'Star Trek' is in that league."
