Paramount Pictures recently announced full details of the upcoming first-season DVD box set of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Scheduled to be released on the 26th of March, the box set will contain seven discs, including all episodes of TNG's first season, with newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound. In addition, the box set will contain a number of Special Features created especially for the DVDs, as well as a pull-out booklet with information on each episode. From March on, Paramount will release another season on DVD every two months, ending in March 2003 with TNG's seventh season.
The first box set can now already be pre-ordered from Amazon.com, ensuring a copy will be shipped out when the set is released. The Region 2 version of the box set was earlier already made available for pre-orders at Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de.
The first-season DVD set will include four special documentaries on the seventh disc in the package. Below is a short listing of these features:
- The Beginning - Using interviews with people such as Gene Roddenberry, Rick Berman and Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard), 'The Beginning' focuses on the challenges of creating a new series and keeping to the original Star Trek vision.
- Selected Crew Analysis - First-season cast members are shown talking about their roles in archive interviews conducted both around the time of TNG's premiere in 1987 and at the end of the show's run in 1994.
- The Making of a Legend - First-season production staff members such as Makeup Supervisor Michael Westmore, Production Designer Herman Zimmerman and Visual Effects Supervisor Dan Curry, as well as Rick Berman, discuss the making of TNG. Some of the topics discussed include the transporter effect, Worf's make-up and the amount of time creating an episode cost.
- Memorable Missions - Cast and crew discuss specific episodes and events from the first season.
Besides the Dolby 5.1 sound mix, regular Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo sound will also be available. In addition, English subtitles and closed-captioning will be provided.
The above information is only confirmed for the Region 1 version of the TNG DVD box set, which will be released in the United States and Canada. While there has been no official announcement on the contents of the Region 2 DVD box set, it would seem logical to assume that some of these features will also be carried over to the European release. As was previously announced, the first Region 2 box set will likely be released on the 4th of March. In addition, the DVD User Group recently reported the set would be released in Australia in April.
