The new logo designed for NASA by Michael Okuda is based on the Apollo 11 mission patch.

As reported at Startrek.com, Mike Okuda has designed the new logo for NASA's next-generation lunar lander, named the Altair. The logo was unveiled Thursday at Houston's Johnson Space Center. Okuda has designed other insignias for NASA, including Project Constellation and the Orion spacecraft.

The Altair is the lunar lander under development for transporting several astronauts to the lunar surface to begin work on a permanent outpost, scheduled to begin by 2020. The Altair is comparable to the lunar module (LEM) of the Apollo missions.

The Altair logo is based on the Apollo mission patch, as seen on this page. Changes from the Apollo 11 logo include the direction in which the eagle is landing, and the shape of the logo.
