Actor Karl Urban, a longtime friend of screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci since they worked together on Hercules and Xena, is reportedly in negotiations to play Dr. McCoy in their upcoming Star Trek film.

As recently as last week, Urban was rumoured to be angling to play the villain in the movie, a role that has since gone to Eric Bana (story). But a source has now told TrekMovie.com that Urban is in negotiations to play McCoy, the role originated so memorably by DeForest Kelley.

Urban's schedule is said to be a potential obstacle, as with director J.J. Abrams' reported choice to play Kirk, Chris Pine. Urban is well-known already to genre fans; in addition playing both Cupid and Julius Caesar alongside Xena, he was Eomer in The Lord of the Rings.

TrekMovie.com also has a production report on the film, claiming that a source has said Moviehole's near-$160 million budget report is inflated (story) and citing a Hollywood Reporter article that said both Captain Kirk's parents and Captain Christopher Pike would appear in the movie.

At one time it was rumoured that Abrams' Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise would cameo as Pike (story).
